Social Life

The skeletons of 3 bodies, one above the other, were found some years ago at Curium area in Limassol. It was a family of 3, a father, a mother and an infant. The last move that they seemed to have done was the ultimate effort for protection against the devastating earthquake that struck the area. For that reason they were found hugging tightly, lying together as one.

The family’s skeletons were found after hundreds of years, in the 20th century, leaving the bones of these unfortunate people at the mercy of the ancient city, which after the earthquake was abandoned. Although the members of the three-member family were not the only ones found by the earthquake, the spectacle from their union remains a shocking sight until today, pointing the powerful bond between the members of the family. The bones of the family are now located at the local archaeological museum of Curium, in Episkopi.

The victims of the family were found embraced in the place where was hit by the great earthquake, burying the bodies of the victims forever in the debris. The big earthquake that struck Curium in 365 AD destroyed the city, giving a vicious end to the great city-kingdom of Cyprus. Find out more about the Curium’s earthquake here.

Curium is located today at the west of Limassol, in the area of Episkopi, where one can see the remains of the ancient city and its great monuments. Find out more about the archaeological site of Curium here.
