18 +1 moments that sealed Limassol in 2016 and we need to remember!

Indeed, the leap year 2016 left behind many dissatisfied. While 2016 sure did leave its mark in Limassol, this was not necessarily so bad. A short review of the year allows us to say that it was just another year with wonderful moments and important events in the city.

Yes, there might have been mishaps and setbacks and incidents that we want to leave behind forever, both personally as well as collectively. But our motto is this: keep the good things to illuminate our path to the even better ones. So we picked out those who we would like to accompany us in the new year and we share them with you, hoping that you too consider them as something special and important in order to keep us moving forward with confidence in 2017.

1. Important developments in the tourism industry

Decision on casino-resort in Limassol

The Cypriot government awarded the consortium Melco-Hard Rock to build the casino-resort in Limassol.


Le Meridien will be the new luxurious Park Lane Resort

The investment on the renovation on the hotel will cost up to €70 million.

New super luxurious hotel in Limassol by Stademos Hotels
A new hotel unit of 170 bedrooms has been designed on the model of other smaller hotels, known as boutique hotels.


A whole new image for the Four Seasons Hotel
In April 2016 reopened after a massive renovation to unravel to its guests a its radically transformed image, promising a whole new luxurious experience.

2. TOTAL at the Limassol Port
TOTAL signs an agreement which will be providing the company services at the Limassol Port, confirming its important role in the region.

3. International award for the project "Immigrants" by students in Kolossi
The students and their teacher, Popi Nicolaou, made Limassol and Cyprus proud worldwide.

4. Carnival and Marathon in Limassol hit new records
Annual events are among Limassol’s greatest attractions, making the city one of the most vibrant and energetic places to be in. Limassol Marathon hit a 13000 participation record and Limassol Carnival, a long tradition in the city, reached the record number of 140 groups, overcoming the number of 15000 persons in the grand parade.

5. Seals make an appearance at the Limassol port
A rare and beautiful sight in the sea of the city.

6. Limassol hosts the first medieval theme park
Cyprus Land, a unique theme park that takes visitors to a tour through Cyprus of the period of the knights and kings, opened its doors in Limassol.

7. Foundation stone for the private Oncology Center

Preparations have begun for the first radiotherapy center in Limassol in a private clinic to be erected in Agios Athanasios.

8. First Beach water polo in the Limassol sea
The city, an increasingly popular destination for water sports, hosted the first tournament water polo in the open sea.​

9. The city’s athletes’ achievements got us feeling proud
With a respectable representation in the Olympic team in Rio in 2016, as well as other achievements of Limassol’s athletes in international events, the city can be proud for Limassolians’ performance in sports. Pavlos Kontidis’ first gold medal in a world event in Australia, Antonis Arestis’ silver medal in the European Paralympic event in Italy, Karolina Pelendritou’s and Milan Trajkovic’s participation in final races in swimming and hurdles race respectively in Rio 2016, as well as the participation of Marios Georgiou and Sotia Neofytou in the Olympic team are definitely among the moments that will be considered landmarks for Limassol’s athletes. 

10. Official opening of the Old Port
The city's Old Port, after his impressive regeneration, opened officially with a bold celebration its doors to the public.

11. Divers hit a Guinness record with an underwater human chain
In front of the dock of the Old Port a total of 280 divers formed a human chain in the water.

12. Crete – Limassol: 700 km of upright paddling
After 700 km of upright paddling from Crete to Cyprus, Costas Symeonides managed to give a bill of 33 thousand euro to The Center for Preventive Pediatrics.

13. CUT among the top Universities of the European Union
In Times Higher Education World University CUT has achieved first place in the category of EU Universities, with the main criterion being performance based on age (experience) and running time. Also in 2016, CUT makes the first step in its expansion by setting the foundations for the rehabilitation clinic at the Old Limassol Hospital.

14. French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in Limassol
Limassol welcomed the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle of the French Navy on Sunday morning 16/10.

15. Pattichion Municipal Theatre raises its curtain
After 10 years of absence, one of Limassol's historic theaters is illuminated again.

16. World windsurfing event in Limassol
The sea and the city of Limassol as well as the Limassol Nautical Club hosted for the first time the RS: X Youth World Windsurfing Championship.
 

17. Τhe new passengers’ hall in Limassol port is ready

A modern architectural gem is now hosted in the Limassol port, which will greet the public, providing the first impression of the city.

18. Wind of optimism from positive developments in property
Property sales did hit several records in Limassol in 2016. Month after month there would be a new raise in sales, with  plenty of foreign citizens among the buyers. The following are proof of the positive vibe in the market for Limassol and Cyprus as well.

Around 2 years after the commencement of construction work at The Oval, the tallest commercial building in Cyprus, the project is about to be delivered.
